Scandium is a silvery-white metal that's known for being lightweight and strong. It's actually one of the lightest elements in the transition metal group. Scandium is also quite resistant to corrosion, making it a reliable and durable metal. Scandium was discovered in 1879 by Lars Fredrik Nilson. The element was named after Scandinavia itself, paying homage to its Nordic roots. It has a melting point of 1541 degrees Celsius.

Scandium has many uses. In its alloyed form it is added to bicycle frames, aircraft, baseball bats, and many others. In addition it is used in the production of high intensity floodlights.
