Ytterbium is the fourteenth member of the Lanthanide series, being located in the first row below the periodic table of elements. It is a silver metal with a melting point of 824 degrees Celsius. It was identified in 1878 by Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac. 

Ytterbium can be used as a doping agent in stainless steel to improve its properties.
