Nitrogen is located in the second row and the fifth group in the periodic table. It is a colorless gas with a boiling point of -196 degrees Celsius. It makes up most of our atmosphere. It can form up to 3 bonds. Nitrogen was first identified in 1772 by Daniel Rutherford. Nitrogen is an important element in chemistry because it forms various compounds such as nitrates and ammonium groups.
Nitrogen has many uses. Liquid nitrogen is used to cool down high temperature superconductors along with cooling down the liquid Helium required for MRI machines. Nitrogen is also a key constituent in some explosives. Nitrogen is also present in many proteins and amino acids.
