Lanthanum is the first member of the Lanthanide series, being located in the first row below the periodic table of elements. It is a silvery-white metal with a melting point of 920 degrees Celsius. It was identified in 1839 by Carl Gustav Mosander. When alloyed, it can act as a hydrogen sponge. It is also a rare metal.
In the alloy "mischmetal" it is used in the flints in cigarette lighters. It is also used to neutralize phosphorus and prevent unwanted algae growth in bodies of water.
