Europium is the seventh member of the Lanthanide series, being located in the first row below the periodic table of elements. It is a silvery-white metal with a melting point of 826 degrees Celsius. It was identified in 1901 by Eugene-Anatole Demarcay. Its compounds can normally display phosphorescence.
Europium is used in Euro banknotes so they can't be forged. It is also used in white fluorescent lights.
